Creative Thinking Techniques

This is one of the 12 creative thinking techniques we learnt about.

Re-framing Matrix

This is a creative thinking technique used to look at problems/issues with a product from different perspectives. It does this by using a simple four grid format with a box in the middle where you would place problem.

The next step would be to write the 4 Ps down.

The words are Product, Potential, Planning, and People. You could use whatever words fit better for your product but these 4 words are the correct way to use this creative thinking technique.

This technique could be very useful for a Graphic Communicator. Say, for example, I had just created a poster for an event. If I then put it up online and it wasn’t grabbing peoples attention or people were saying they couldn’t understand a curtain element. I could use the Re-Framing matrix to solve these problems.

Here is an example I have made for this hypothetical situation:re-framing-matrix-100

After trying to use this for a poster I feel it would be better for interactive products like websites and apps.

The other Creative Techniques are:

  • Brainstorming
  • Mindmapping
  • Forced Analogy/Random Word
  • The checklist
  • The 6 Thinking hats
  • Picture Association
  • Scamper
  • Lotus Blossom
  • Attribute listing
  • Metaphorical Thinking

Ephemera Project

WOW this was a difficult project! I really, really enjoyed it though. It was nice to get a brief like this as it was totally different to everything I have done before. Trying to fit so much information into an A5, 16 page, magazine. It was a really good way of using and reminding me of what we had done over this term.

Where to begin, firstly I made a pattern, this was to give the magazine a visual style. It took me several tries to get the right pattern but I think this one fits quite nicely. I wanted the pattern to go over the pictures of the designers. I always wanted the picture to be on the outer top corners. Like you can see bellow. The problem was that as I had some white colour in the pattern so it was covering up important parts of the picture.

To fix this I used an effect called multiply.

To do this I went to I selected the pattern and the image, then i went to window and clicked effects which brought up this box.

I then clicked the drop down list which says normal.

2017-01-26 (1).png

and then clicked multiply. This was the result.

Another trouble was my line length was too long here is an example.

2017-01-26 (3).png

This problem occurred because i was using too little columns in my grid. I was using a 2 column grid. So I moved onto a four column grid which made easier to place things accurately on the page. As you can see bellow most of the text and images went across two columns. The only elements which did not were the dates and times and where possible the names.

2017-01-26 (4).png

For this project I decided to use 2 type faces the first being Gill Sans which makes up the main body and then magneto for the names. Here are some examples of each.

So the title, or name, is in Magneto Bold. The heading is in Gill Sans MT Italic. The sub heading, or question, is Gill Sans MT italic with grey fill. And finally the main body, or answer, is plain Gill Sans MT.

The point size for each is (point size in image is not accurate):

  • Title: 31
  • Heading: 12
  • Sub Heading: 11
  • Main Body: 11

Hockney’s ‘Joiners’

Today we were looking at David Hockney’s ‘joiners’. In these images he has taken a lot of photos then cut and pasted them together to make interesting art works.

This image is created from a series of images taken of Laura Hockney, Davids mother, in grave yard. I really like how David has included his feet in this image, it is almost like he is enforcing him and his mothers relationship.
This photo is of Hockney himself. I think this style of image is great. i love the different lights and shades in each image and would like to experiment myself and create a portrait in this style.
To me this image looks like an old couple doing a cross word together. this style creates energy in this image, almost like you can see them work out each word.

We were then asked to create our own in pairs. I was paired with Simeon which was nice as we’ve never worked together and he is a second year so was interesting to hear how the course has changed.

We had to choose from Journey and Collaboration as a concept. We chose journey as we both had an idea to do with stairs. This is what we came up with.

Joining Image BLOG.jpgI was really proud of this piece, but Ray said it still needed some work. He  said that we needed more of the figure, a better sense of journey, and a clearer shot of my hand on the railing. I will get about making these changes tomorrow.

joining-image-complete-for-screenI am pleased that we made these changes at does convey a journey much better. My only issue is that we were using a different camera with different specs. The problem with this is that  you can clearly see the images we have added.

Overall I am pleased with the outcome of this project and hope to do similar projects in the future. One thing I would do differently in the future would be to have a coloured background. This piece would look better with a light blue background to match my coat and the stairs.

Image Series for 2 Chosen Topics

Our image block has come to an end. I thoroughly enjoyed this section of our course and feel I have learnt some useful techniques and skills!

We were given a brief to create two series of images, four for each series, advertising a summer course. I wanted to be able to use my own images in this project so I chose easy to achieve subjects. My choices were Conservation and Plumbing. I chose conservation because i could simply just take photos of leaves, trees, fences, paths e,e. I originally wanted to create a series for architecture but it was raining on the only day had free for photographing buildings. I was racking my brain as to what subjects  I could easily shoot in my house which I could create interesting images from. I was walking into the kitchen when, out the corner of my eye, I spotted the pipes in the bathroom. Perfect! Here are the original images that i used to create these series of images.

For conservation I wanted to keep the images fairly close to there originals. I didn’t think it appropriate to add lots of crazy filters and effects. Here is what I had in the end.

I would have liked better quality photographs. For the first three I used selective colour to make the greens more vibrant. In the last photo i did the same thing but blurred out the background as i wanted the tree and its support to be the main feature in this series.

With the plumbing series I experimented with using two filters Half Tone and Stamp to create these interesting images.

After showing these images to Ray. He said that i should put a cream outline on the plumbing ones to make the first image stand out better. I highly agree and ill be making these changes shortly.

Learning to prepare images for screen print using Photoshop.

I have used a couple of these techniques before but never imagined using them for this purpose. Using Adobe Photoshop to manipulate image is a really good tool for creating stencils which are used in screen printing. Screen printing is a form of print art which can be used to make graphics/art for all sorts of things e.g. T Shirts, Posters and many more.

The first step is to put an image in to Photoshop. I chose a portrait taken of my self which i like.

2016-11-01 The next step we took was to create a new Photoshop document. We created an A4 document because we are going to be printing in A4. Make sure that you choose International Paper in the Document Type.2016-11-01-2The simplest may to place your image on the A4 document is to to pop the window out so you can see both you’re image and the A4 document make sure to have the move selection tool selected. Click and drag your image into the A4 document. 2016-11-01-3If your image does not fit the page correctly press control/command+T to bring up the resizing box.  2016-11-01-4Next you will want to alter the brightness and contrast to make the image more dynamic as this will help with the techniques we will be using. 2016-11-01-9Select image at the top of your screen, then adjustments, then brightness and contrast. Experiment to get the right effect.2016-11-01-6Also you will want to Duplicate the layer which includes the image. The easiest to do this is go to your layers window then click and drag the layer onto the new layer symbol. This means you can combine a a mixture of tools create an interesting stencil. you should create about 4-5 layers. this will give you room to experiment and combine layers.

2016-11-01-8Something else you should do to make some of the tools more effective is make the image grey scale. You will NOT want to do this on all 4 of the layers.

2016-11-14.png Making your image grey scale is easily done. Just go into image, mode then click grey scale. Its as easy as that. Now time to experiment with some tools to create an interesting stencil. The first thing you will want to do is experiment with the halftone pattern filters.

2016-11-14 (1).png To do this go to filter then filter gallery which will bring up this window. From here you could just experiment and find you own way but I will talk through a couple filters i like to use!

2016-11-14 (2).pngthe halftone effect comes in three different patterns, Line, Circle and Dot. Each of these can be used to create interesting stencils. You can also change the point size of each of these and how much contrast you would like. Like before the more contrast the better.

2016-11-14-22016-11-14-32016-11-14-4After some messing around I decided to go for a circle pattern with 30 contrast and a point size of 12. Next I am going to try a different filter on a new layer. So I am going to hide the layer i just worked on.

2016-11-14-62016-11-14-7So now you will want to open the filter gallery again but this time were going to try the stamp effect because it will look really good as a stencil.

2016-11-14 (8).png

For this effect you have the ability to control: Light/Dark Balance and the smoothness of the lines. 2016-11-14-9

I’ve gone for: Light/Dark balance: 19 Smoothness: 392016-11-14-10Now I will combine the two layers I have worked with to do this I will experiment with the order of these layers and the opacity.

I have just discovered something which is perfect for making stencils! within the filter gallery is a layers window here are some interesting stencil ideas i have created using this.

2016-11-14-122016-11-14-132016-11-14-14Just goes to show that experimenting is key!

Terry Richardson

Terry Richardson Vs Jackass (Terry second from the left behind Wee Man)

I had never heard of Terry Richardson until today. I think his vulgar and controversial  photos are brilliant. Terry Richardson is a fashion and portrait photographer who as photographed all kinds of people; from Barrack Obama to Jack Ass.

This image depicts Steve O from Jack Ass. I love this image because of how honest it is and because it is well known that Steve O had a really bad drug problem. If you like it is Steve O in his natural state.
This image is quite a contrast to the Steve O image. I think it shows that he covers a broad spectrum of style and controversy.
Like I said he has photographed a broad spectrum of celebrates.
